WASHINGTON - Director, Strategic Systems Programs Vice Admiral Johnny R. Wolfe Jr. attended and delivered remarks at the 2023 Crane Congressional Breakfast on June 21.

The purpose of the annual event is to provide Members of Congress a forum to hear firsthand from Department of the Navy (DoN) officials, industry, and academia partners about the important work that Team Crane performs in support of the warfighter. Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) is the Navy’s acquisitions command responsible for developing and deploying the nation's Sea-Based Strategic Weapons Systems, to include managing requirements for training, systems, equipment, facilities, and personnel. NSWC Crane, a key component of Team Crane, sets the standard in technology acquisition, engineering, and sustainment, is a leader in STEM innovation. SSP relies on expertise from NSWC Crane to tackle unique system challenges.

Vice Adm. Wolfe, Director Strategic Systems Programs, recognized the Crane workforce for their contributions in support of the nation’s sea based strategic deterrent – and encouraged them to keep the pressure on.

"The United States is the best in the world at this - but we're only the best because our people are the best,” said VAdm Wolfe. “The people of Crane work hard every day to deliver this capability and we should all sleep better knowing Crane has the watch.”

“Team Crane” consists of Naval Support Activity Crane (NSA Crane), Crane Army Ammunition Activity, and Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane), all located near Crane, Indiana. NSA Crane is the third largest naval installation in the world and is home to over 5,000 DoD civilian and contractor personnel. NSWC Crane, located on the installation, plays a critical role in ensuring the United States’ defense and readiness through cutting edge innovation in areas, including Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions, and Electronic Warfare, making this corner of the heartland a leader in STEM innovation for critical national defense missions.

SSP is also responsible for Conventional Prompt Strike, one of the Navy’s primary efforts in support of hypersonic capabilities development across DoD. Vice Adm. Wolfe also thanked Crane for its significant contributions to the U.S. Conventional Prompt Strike/Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon program.

This year’s hosts included Sen. Todd Young, Sen. Mike Braun, Rep. Larry Bucshon, and Rep. Erin Houchin. Speakers throughout the breakfast highlighted Crane’s track-record of achieving technical outcomes that meet the evolving needs of the warfighter.  Other notable speakers included the Commander for Joint Munitions Command and the Deputy Under Secretary for Defense for Research and Engineering.

Strategic Systems Programs is the Navy command that provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for the sea-based leg of the nation’s nuclear deterrent triad, ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nation’s Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) Trident II (D5LE) strategic weapon system. A credible, effective nuclear deterrent remains a cornerstone of national security policy in the 21st century and is essential to our national security and the security of U.S. allies.
