ATLANTIC OCEAN (Sept. 6, 1977) – An unarmed Poseidon C3 missile launches from the fleet ballistic missile submarine USS Henry Clay (SSBN 625) off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida. The launch was part of the SSBN’s Demonstration and Shakedown Operations, which certified the readiness of the SSBN crew and the operational performance of the submarine’s strategic weapons system before returning to operational availability. Today, the Sea-Based Strategic Deterrence mission continues. The current generation of submarine launched ballistic missile—the Trident II D5/D5LE—along with the Intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear capable bombers create the nation’s strategic nuclear deterrence capability. The triad of capabilities – SLBMs, ICBMs and nuclear capable bombers – are each undergoing modernization to ensure our nation’s ability to serve as the backbone of our nation’s security.
