LIVERMORE, CA. (August 1st, 2024) - Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) Chief Engineer Steven Van Dyk (left of center) tours the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. NIF is at the forefront of nuclear technological and scientific development, becoming the first to achieve fusion ignition in a laboratory setting in December 2022. SSP partners with NIF to benefit from the specialized testing and experimentation capabilities that serve to increase our understanding of weapon physics, including the properties and survivability of weapons-relevant materials. Van Dyk's visit highlighted the importance of SSP partnerships with unique organizations to ensure the continued reliability of the Navy's strategic weapon system. SSP is the Navy command that provides cradle-to-grave lifecycle support for the sea-based leg of the nation's nuclear triad. This includes training, systems, equipment, facilities and personnel responsible for ensuring the safety, security, and effectiveness of the nation's Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) Trident II (D5LE) Strategic Weapon System.
